This bridge hangs 50 metres above the Dranse river and it's protected by the Federal Inventory of Historic Swiss Transport Routes (IVS 438).
This emblematic bridge of regional importance dates from 1828. It was used on foot or by mule to link Martigny to Aosta via Lourtier, Fenêtre de Durand and Valpelline (IT).
Since ancient times, the Fenêtre Durand pass has been in the shadow of the famous Grand Saint-Bernard pass, its neighbour. During the 11th-12th centuries, when the two sides of the mountain were under the same sovereign, this passage allowed various commercial exchanges as well as smuggling.
